Objections to the probe idea come in several forms. The machines would need materials to build their doppelgangers, some researchers note, and there may simply be not enough well-placed asteroids or rocky planets to allow this to happen often enough.

Microelectromechanical systems, better known as MEMS, are usually produced from silicon. The innovation of the TAU researchers -- engineering doctoral candidates Leeya Engel and Jenny Shklovsky under the supervision of Prof. Yosi Shacham-Diamand of the School of Electrical Engineering and Slava Krylov of the School of Mechanical Engineering -- is creating a novel micro-printing process that works a highly flexible and non-toxic organic polymer. The resulting MEMS components can be more comfortably and safely used in the human body and they expend less energy.


For years, MEMS membranes, like other MEMS components, were primarily fabricated from silicon using a set of processes borrowed from the semiconductor industry. TAU's new printing process, published in Microelectronic Engineering and presented at the AVS 59th International Symposium in Tampa, FL, yields rubbery, paper-thin membranes made of a particular kind of organic polymer. This material has specific properties that make it attractive for micro- and nano-scale sensors and actuators. More importantly, the polymer membranes are more suitable for implantation in the human body than their silicon counterparts, which partially stems from the fact that they are hundreds of times more flexible than conventional materials.


"The use of new, soft materials in micro devices stretches both the imagination and the limits of technology," Engel says, "but introducing polymer MEMS to industry can only be realized with the development of printing technologies that allow for low cost mass production. The team's new polymer membranes can already be quickly and inexpensively produced.


The next step, she says, is to use the printing process to make functional sensors and actuators almost entirely out of the polymer at the micro- and nano-scales. Such flexible machines could be put to use in things like artificial muscles and screens so flexible that you can roll them up and put them in your pocket.


BackgroundIntroduced in the mid-80's, Micro Machines were a series of micro sized vehicles ranging from sports cars to boats to aircraft created by toy company, Galoob. For a brief time outsold brands like Hot Wheels and Matchbox. Many fans may recall John Moschitta Jr. (aka the voice of G1 Blurr) was the spokesperson for the line filming many memorable commercials.


The goal of the experiment was to make the part of a MEMS device known as the actuator, which in this case converts heat energy into mechanical displacement or motion. The actuator looks like a web of diamond wires that expands and contracts like a bellows as it is heated and cooled. This web of diamond filaments is attached to a long shaft, which can then in turn be attached to a microgear system to provide rotational motion.


After its initial stint on the NES, the game was ported to numerous other consoles and home computers (the SNES edition actually gained a licence from Nintendo), kick-starting a series that went through multiple hardware generations and saw remakes on both home and mobile platforms - in fact, Codemasters is about to release a new version of the game years after losing the licence. But looking back on the original game, Graham reflects on the experience of making games for the NES. "Come to think of it, the age of releasing games on ROM is long gone now. That door is closed. It was nice to have the experience of having your game boot up instantly from a cartridge." When Micro Machines first debuted in 1987, the television commercials were voiced by the record-breakingly fast-spoken John Moschitta, who also voiced the Transformer Blurr in the same manner. A year later, Hasbro decided to compete in the "micro toys" market by launching the Micromasters play pattern (originally named "Micro Transformers"), which would make up half of Hasbro's Transformers output for 1989 and 1990. In 1996, Hasbro again tried to compete with Micro Machines in the form of the MicroVerse play pattern, featuring not only Beast Wars-branded sets, but also Tonka and G.I. Joe vehicles.

Currently includes assemblers, furnaces, miners, beacons, and raders. Bonus compatibility with icons from ShinyBobGFX,/ShinyAngelGFX and using the new intermediates from bobs electronics, bobs ores, and bobs plates. Strongly recommended to disable the Large Area Mining Drills from Bobs Mining mod settings, as the micro miners accomplish a similar purpose of allowing more entities to mine the same patch of ore.


Config options available to disable each type of micro machine, tweak balance changes (making micro machines just as easy to craft as the original machines), and disabling the micro-miniaturization tech tree.


If the micro-miniaturization tech tree is enabled, micro machines are unlocked by a respective technology which requires the previous tier of micro machine, as well as the equivalent tier of the regular sized machine (ex: Micro Assembler 2 requires Micro Assembler 1 and Automation 2). Techs are 2x the cost of the base technology. If disabled, micro machines are unlocked by the same tech as their original sized machines.


Furthermore, if both the micro machines tech tree and the mini machines tech tree are enabled, then the micro machines tech will be locked behind the mini machines tech (which would itself be locked behind the original technology). Technology costs may be an uneven number (501 )


The only other balancing option for micro machines at the moment, is their crafting recipes. They are currently twice the cost of the base machine (their techs should also be roughly twice as expensive to unlock). This is to balance the fact that they are the same crafting speed and energy requirements of the full sized machine. There was no simple way to balance micro machines in the same vein as mini machines, because the reductions would be too great to be useful (Would they be 9x less powerful, with 1/9 the energy requirement? Doesn't make much sense...)


Other mods compatibility:--Bobsmods: Creates micro machine versions of the newly added higher tiered machines. Implements intermediates from bobs electronics and bobs ores/plates, if detected.--Gotlag's Electric Furnaces: Creates micro machine versions of the newly added furnaces. Can be used alongside bobs mods.--Factorio Extended Plus: Creates micro machine versions of the newly added higher tiered machines.--Fantario: All changes to base machines (requiring heat/fuel) are copied by micro machines, requiring the same power source. Micro-miniaturization technology requires basic science pack tech. New intermediates are properly used in micro machine recipes.


Known Micro-Issues:Micro miners only have one fluid input/output due to tile limitations on fluid pipes (one fluid i/o per tile). Located on the back of the miner, as I'm not sure if they can connect on both sides if placed in left/right orientation.Micro assemblers with fluid outputs sometimes look a bit odd when connecting pipes to them (the pipe connections look massive in comparison)Fantario micro assemblers don't appear to visibly connect to heat pipes on the south or right sides, but they should still be receive heat as normal. 041b061a72
